Martin Griffiths, United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Aid Coordinator, drew attention to the food problem in the East African country of Somalia.

Griffiths stated that there may be famine in parts of Somalia by the end of this year.

Emphasizing that the food problem and famine may adversely affect the Bay region, especially in the south of the country, Griffiths said, "Famine is at the door".

Griffiths shared the information that the country is struggling with a long-standing drought, adding that the outbreak of the war in Ukraine fueled the food problem and famine.

80 percent of Somalia is battling extreme drought

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 80 percent of Somalia is struggling with severe drought.

The Somali government declared a "state of emergency" across the country on November 23, 2021, due to the increasing drought.
