US Ambassador Fisher, supports resumption of Cyprus negotiations
US Ambassador Julie D. Fisher, the American envoy in Cyprus, has expressed her support for the resumption of negotiations aimed at a two-zone, two-community federation based on political equality. During her visit to DISY Party leader Anna Dimitriou, Fisher reiterated the US's commitment to returning to the negotiation table.
Fisher emphasized the importance of restarting negotiations to address the Cyprus issue and underscored the need for a political solution based on a federated system that ensures equality between the two communities. The Alithia newspaper and other media outlets reported on Fisher's statements made during the meeting.
The ambassador also expressed her appreciation for the close cooperation with Cyprus in imposing targeted financial sanctions on individuals and organizations. She highlighted the significant role played by South Cyprus in supporting these efforts.
Additionally, Fisher discussed the issue of individuals fleeing Sudan and returning to their home countries via South Cyprus.
In response, DISY Party President Anna Dimitriou expressed her gratitude to the United States for its support. She acknowledged that during her meeting with Ambassador Fisher, she had the opportunity to provide updates on the situation in Varosha, property-related matters, and the overall progress in resolving the Cyprus issue.
Dimitriou further affirmed that the United States is a valued ally of South Cyprus, particularly regarding the Cyprus issue. She also mentioned that discussions were held on the topic of sanctions, with the government of the Republic of Cyprus expressing its commitment to taking appropriate actions to protect the economy and the country's reputation.
