“Clean Beach" project to reward beaches that meet criteria
The Environmental Protection Department has launched the "Clean Beach" project, which will require beaches to meet all of the Clean Beach Project's criteria, in addition to seawater analysis. If all criteria are met, the beach will be awarded the "Clean Beach" certification.
The "Clean Beach" project, developed by the Environmental Protection Department under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, aims to promote environmental awareness and education, maintaining cleanliness in freshwater and beaches, and ensuring environmental safety.
To qualify for the "Clean Beach" certification, beaches must meet 29 criteria related to environmental education and awareness, water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. The certification will be given for a year to the beaches that meet all criteria and will be re-evaluated annually.
The project, which aims to promote sustainable high-quality tourism and support public health protection, highlights the importance of environmental sustainability while enhancing environmental consciousness.
Similar to the "Clean Beach" project, international standards are followed and implemented by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) abroad to maintain the environment and promote public health protection.
Seawater analysis, which is one of the project's most significant criteria, will be carried out during the season by the Primary Health Services of the Ministry of Health. In addition to seawater analysis, beaches must meet all 29 criteria to receive the "Clean Beach" certification.
It is hoped that the introduction of the "Clean Beach" project will lead to significant improvements in the tourism sector and increased popularity amongst tour operators and individuals planning their holidays.
To apply for the certification, all necessary documents must be compiled and submitted to the Environmental Protection Department of the TRNC, as well as emailing temizplaj@gmail.com.
