Forest department ıssues red alert for fire hazard

Salih Güneş, the Director of the Forest Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, announced that they have issued a red alert for the fire risk until Friday, July 28th, in response to the Meteorology Department's forecast of temperatures rising up to 45 degrees this week.

Director Güneş stated that according to the information provided by the Meteorology Department, the country will be under the influence of a hot air mass, with temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees and relative humidity dropping below 20% throughout the week.
Güneş mentioned that a series of precautions have been taken until July 28th, including the prohibition of entry into all fire-prone picnic areas and forests. He urged citizens to show the necessary sensitivity and comply with the measures.
Referring to Article 18(1) of the Forest Conservation Regulation, published under Chapter 60 of the Forest Law, Güneş highlighted that they have prohibited entry into forests based on the authority granted to the Forest Department. He shared the precautions they have taken with the public in a list of bullet points, which include:
- Individuals who must use roads within the forest area should obtain permission from the nearest forest station.
- According to the law, no fires can be lit from May 1st to October 31st for any reason whatsoever. It is essential for citizens to show utmost sensitivity in not lighting fires during these dates.
- Individuals driving on main roads passing through forested areas must refrain from any action that could cause a fire (especially not throwing cigarette butts from vehicles).
- It is crucial for the public to report any signs of fire without delay to the toll-free Forest Fire Reporting hotline at "Hello 177" or to the Fire Department at the emergency hotline "Hello 199" for early intervention.
- In the event of a fire, the public is called upon to join firefighting efforts and mobilize all available resources, as it is both a legal requirement and a civic duty.
- Those engaging in agricultural activities near forests must take necessary precautions against the risk of fire.
- The burning and disposal of waste in landfills used by municipalities and the public pose the most significant threat to our forests.
- In order to protect our forests from the danger of fire, it is essential for citizens to avoid activities that may lead to a fire and to comply with the instructions given by Forest Department Officers during inspections, in order to prevent further tragedies.
- We have full confidence that the public will show understanding for these temporary measures and assist us in our efforts to protect our forests, which are a vital source of oxygen and life.
