President Tatar: The new policy we have put forward is a realistic approach
President Ersin Tatar stated, "The new policy and vision we have put forward is a realistic approach that should be considered not only for the benefit of the two sides on the island of Cyprus but also for regional and global stability."
In a written statement from the Presidency, Tatar noted that there were baseless claims reflected in the Greek Cypriot press regarding his visit to the Anthropology Laboratory with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, related to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).
Tatar said, "As we have repeatedly emphasized in our official statements, the main reason for the deadlock in the long-standing political reconciliation efforts on the island of Cyprus is the Greek Cypriot side's behavior as if they are the sole owners of the island and their failure to respect the equality derived from the internationally recognized Turkish Cypriot Side and its essential rights enshrined in international treaties."
President Tatar also emphasized that "a formal negotiation process cannot begin without the confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status, which are the most basic rights of the Turkish Cypriot Side."
Tatar continued his statement as follows:
"The new policy and vision we have put forward for a sustainable and fair solution to the Cyprus issue is a realistic approach that should be considered not only for the benefit of the two sides on the island of Cyprus but also for regional and global stability.
In this context, it is important to remember that we remain open to dialogue and committed to a diplomacy-oriented approach.
Our cooperation proposal, including the 6 confidence-building measures we have prepared in a win-win philosophy, which will contribute to both sides, the island of Cyprus, and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, has been conveyed by the UN Secretary-General to the Greek Cypriot side. These proposals are the clearest and most concrete evidence of our goodwill.
The Turkish Cypriot side is determined to continue its efforts, as we have done in the past, to establish institutional cooperation that will benefit both sides, particularly on humanitarian issues, and to enhance good neighborly relations."
