EU Warns of "Negative Consequences" If TRNC's Membership in TDC is Approved
Dietmar Krissler, the Head of the Central Asia Division at the European Union's External Action Service, has warned that the approval of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) joining the Turkic Council (TDC) could have "negative consequences."
Haravgi newspaper and other sources reported that Dietmar Krissler made this warning during a conference titled "Uzbekistan - The EU's Strategic Partner in Central Asia" organized by a think tank in Brussels.
According to the news report sourced from the "Euractiv" news website, Krissler stated in his conference speech that "the development of cooperation with Central Asian countries would depend on whether they approve North Cyprus's acceptance as an observer in the Turkic Council."
The report also noted that Krissler mentioned that "one of our member states has a great sensitivity regarding the elevation of the status of the TRNC."
