Below-Capacity Levels in South Cyprus Reservoirs

The majority of reservoirs in South Cyprus have fallen well below half of their capacities, with an overall reservoir fill rate dropping to 45.7%.

Fileleftheros newspaper reported that the situation is worrisome, attributing the decline to last year's low rainfall and this year's ongoing drought during the first two months of winter.
The Argaka reservoir, for instance, saw its fill rate drop from 43.1% last year to 19.9% this year. The largest reservoir in South Cyprus, Kouris Reservoir, experienced a significant reduction, with its capacity decreasing from 115 million cubic meters to 45.1 million cubic meters, representing a 39.3% decrease. Last year, the Kouris Reservoir had a fill rate of 62.4%.
The Polemidia (Binatlı) Reservoir's fill rate dropped from 49.8% to 39.6%. Only the Kalopanayiotis Reservoir reported a 100% fill rate, followed by the Arminou Reservoir with an 81.9% fill rate.
Combining the water capacities of Kouris, Kalavasos, Lefkara, Dipotamos, Yermosoyia, Arminou, Polemidia, and Ahna reservoirs (189.4 million cubic meters), the current fill rate is 41.8%, as reported by the newspaper. Reservoirs in the Baf region have a fill rate of 54.8%, while those in the Hrisohu region (Evretu, Argaka, Pomos, and Ay. Marina) have a fill rate of 48.9%.
