Kombos: Holguin Should Be Allowed to Work Comfortably
Cyprus Republic Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, in response to recent remarks by British High Commissioner Irfan Siddiq, stated yesterday that UN Secretary-General's Special Representative Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar should be "allowed to do her job without interference."
The Fileleftheros newspaper reported under the headline "They Are Trying to Influence Holguin's Mission" that Siddiq's recent statements were aimed at influencing the work and activities of UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar.
The newspaper claimed that the Greek Cypriot government had identified attempts to pressure Holguin to "complete her work within a certain timeframe," with Siddiq's statement being cited as an example of this.
Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos also addressed this issue in his statement yesterday, stating that Holguin should be "allowed to do her job without interference."
According to the report, Kombos pointed out that Siddiq had stated in an interview with the Turkish Cypriot media on January 22 that he "rejected the logic of a two-state solution," arguing that there was inconsistency among Siddiq's statements. Kombos commented that the British diplomat "seems to have embraced a middle ground logic but seems to have forgotten that his theses are being rejected by London."
Referring to Holguin's statement that "it is obvious that there are no timetables" regarding efforts to set artificial deadlines, Kombos reiterated the claim that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to start negotiations immediately.
Stating that "it is not possible for them to accept the logic of finding a middle ground," Kombos used the phrase "While one side is outside the framework and the other is within the framework, a middle ground between the two is outside the framework."
Responding to a question about Holguin's contacts with Turkey, Kombos emphasized the need to patiently wait for how the process progresses and what the results will be.
