Christodoulides: Hoping for Reunification of Cyprus

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides expressed his desire for the reunification of Cyprus, underscoring the significance of commemorating the reunification of Europe's last divided capital, Nicosia, and the island of Cyprus itself. During a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who recently visited South Cyprus upon Christodoulides' invitation, both leaders encouraged all parties involved in the Cyprus issue to prepare for consensus towards a solution.

According to Alithia newspaper, Christodoulides and Steinmeier held discussions both privately and with their respective delegations. Following the meeting, they addressed the press, highlighting their hope for the visit to contribute to the advancement of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Christodoulides remarked on the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, expressing his aspiration for the prompt realization of the reunification of Nicosia and Cyprus, considering the occasion.

The newspaper reported that Christodoulides expressed gratitude to Steinmeier for Germany's acceptance of 1000 political asylum seekers from South Cyprus. Additionally, he conveyed satisfaction with bilateral cooperation in culture, irregular migration, defense, health, and tourism.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, Christodoulides highlighted the importance of active participation by the European Union (EU), believing that the EU, possessing necessary guarantees, could play a more proactive role in resolving the Cyprus problem.

Steinmeier, during the press conference, acknowledged past optimistic stages in resolving the Cyprus issue, stating that politics often involves attempting the seemingly impossible. He also expressed Germany's and other EU countries' commitment to supporting the efforts of the United Nations (UN) towards a resolution.

Furthermore, it was reported that Steinmeier announced Germany's decision to send police officers to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for the first time, emphasizing Germany's support for UN efforts on the island.

Steinmeier's visit included various locations in Cyprus, such as the Buffer Zone, the Green Line, and a meeting with UNFICYP Mission Chief Colin Stewart, followed by discussions with Speaker of the House Anita Dimitriu. Today, he is expected to visit the III. Makarios High School in the Venetian Walls area, a refugee reception center in Kofinou, and the village of Lefkara.
