Hasipoğlu: Resolution 186 Continues to Create Comfort Zone for the Greek Cypriot Side in Cyprus

UBP General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu remarked on the 60th anniversary of Resolution 186, stating, "With Resolution 186, the UN Security Council is fueling not a solution but rather perpetuating the problem by creating a comfort zone for the Greek Cypriot side in Cyprus."

He emphasized that the UN has been supporting the Republic of Cyprus, representing the status quo, without any agreement on the island for 60 years.

Hasipoğlu highlighted the historical context, mentioning the attacks launched by the Greek armed forces to annihilate the Turkish Cypriots, and criticized Resolution 186 for disregarding the sovereignty rights of the Turkish Cypriots. He argued that given the unsuccessful negotiation processes, the resolution is outdated and should be revised in light of the realities on the island.

Asserting that Resolution 186 undermines law, equality, humanity, and the right to life, Hasipoğlu pointed out the UN's attempts to make the Turkish Cypriots pay the price for this mistake. He cited the 2017 Crans Montana talks as an example, where the Greek Cypriot side left the negotiation table without looking back, empowered by Resolution 186.

Hasipoğlu underscored a shift in Turkey's and the TRNC's foreign policy, as articulated by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's emphasis on the demand for equal international status and sovereign equality during the Diplomacy Forum in Antalya. He expressed confidence that the obstacles to the TRNC's international recognition would be overcome in the future, allowing for greater engagement with Turkey, other Turkic states, and significant global organizations.
