77 Traffic Accidents and 19 Injuries Reported in a Week
According to a written statement from the Police Press Office, a total of 77 traffic accidents occurred in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) between April 15th and April 21st. The statement also reported that 19 individuals were injured and 62 vehicles sustained damage in these accidents.
The causes of the accidents during this period were attributed to speeding in 24 cases, reckless driving in 17 cases, failure to stop at intersections in 12 cases, tailgating in 11 cases, and other factors in 13 cases.
The total amount of damage resulting from these accidents was reported to be 5,140,527 TL.
The distribution of accidents by district is as follows: "Nicosia: 28; Famagusta: 13; Kyrenia: 32; Morphou: 2; İskele: 2."
Furthermore, during the period from April 15th to April 21st, a total of 11,366 drivers were checked during traffic inspections conducted by the police nationwide. Among them, 4,513 drivers were found to have committed offenses and were reported, initiating legal proceedings against them.
The breakdown of offenses is as follows:
- Speeding: 1,256
- Speeding detected by mobile devices: 829
- Reckless driving: 13
- Careless driving: 35
- Operating a vehicle without navigation license: 58
- Driving without a license: 11
- Driving under the influence of alcohol: 107
- Using a mobile phone while driving: 75
- Driving without wearing a seatbelt: 34
- Failure to comply with traffic signs and signals: 50
- Disregarding traffic lights: 7
- Operating an uninspected vehicle: 23
- Operating a vehicle without insurance or outside coverage: 25
- Unauthorized passenger transportation (taxi): 7
- Unauthorized transportation of goods: 8
- Riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet: 2
- Driving without proper lighting or violating lighting regulations: 6
- Other traffic offenses: 2,796
The statement also noted that a total of 362 vehicles were impounded, and 7 drivers were arrested during this period.
