Christodoulides: We Are in an Important Week
Cyprus Republic President Nikos Christodoulides has described the upcoming meeting between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his personal representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, as indicative of an "important week."
President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of the week during his statement following a luncheon hosted by the Belgian Ambassador to South Cyprus.
The Greek Cypriot government was informed about the meeting scheduled between Guterres and Holguin, stressing the importance of the information that Holguin will convey. The government expects Holguin to provide "neutral information."
President Christodoulides expressed hope for positive developments, stating, "We are ready." He emphasized the crucial nature of the week and the potential for progress on the Cyprus issue.
When reminded of Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Yerapetridis' upcoming meeting with Guterres, Christodoulides noted that they are in coordination with Greece. He mentioned that the message Yerapetridis will convey aligns with their previously shared views, reiterating, "A meeting must start to see if there is a possibility for the resumption of negotiations."
In a previous statement, Holguin mentioned that Christodoulides knows "what will unlock the negotiation process." However, Christodoulides did not clarify what Holguin meant, and the opposition has not raised this issue.
