According to reports from the Alithia newspaper, the South Cyprus government is particularly anxious about Holguin's impartiality in her forthcoming report.

The report noted that Holguin's recent statements to Kathimerini newspaper, where she mentioned that President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus "knows what could unlock the process," have not been addressed yet. This raises questions about how the involved parties perceive objectivity in the ongoing process.

The newspaper highlighted that if Holguin's statements lack substantial content, President Christodoulides should condemn her for creating misleading impressions domestically and for making unfounded allegations against him. Holguin's remarks suggested that the Greek Cypriot side was blocking the resumption of negotiations.

The article also mentioned that it is unclear whether Holguin’s report to the UN Secretary-General will be made public. However, it is expected to be included in Guterres' next report on the UN Peacekeeping Force and the good offices mission in Cyprus.

Government's Statement

In a statement to RIK's morning program, Deputy Spokesperson of the Greek Cypriot Government, Yannis Antoniou, expressed that their goal is to establish prerequisites for the resumption of negotiations. If this proves unattainable, Holguin should reflect the truth objectively, indicating that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to negotiate while the Turkish Cypriot side sets preconditions related to sovereign equality.

Antoniou acknowledged that indicators for the resumption of negotiations are not positive but assured that the government would continue efforts to overcome the deadlock.

Holguin’s Meetings with Guterres and Yerapetridis

The Alithia newspaper reported that Maria Angela Holguin briefed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York about the outcomes of her meetings with all stakeholders involved in the Cyprus issue. Holguin also met with Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Yerapetridis.

According to Haravgi newspaper, Guterres held separate meetings with Holguin and Yerapetridis at the UN headquarters. President Christodoulides mentioned that it was anticipated that Yerapetridis would propose exploring the potential for resuming negotiations during his meeting with Guterres.

Christodoulides affirmed that Athens and South Cyprus are coordinating closely, and the next steps would be decided based on the outcomes of the discussions.
