Record High Sea Surface Temperatures in the Mediterranean

According to the measurement results of the Turkish State Meteorological Service, sea surface temperatures in the eastern Mediterranean have exceeded 29 degrees Celsius. A record measurement of 29.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Karataş, Adana.

In the summer of 2024, characterized by decreased rainfall and record-breaking temperatures compared to previous years, sea surface temperatures are also reaching unprecedented levels. According to the Meteorological Service's sea surface temperature measurement reports, the sea temperature in Karataş Fisherman's Wharf reached 29.3 degrees Celsius.

Measurements in other locations include 28.8 degrees Celsius in Iskenderun, Hatay; 28.5 degrees Celsius in Kemer, Antalya; 28 degrees Celsius in Muratpaşa, Antalya; 27.6 degrees Celsius in Yenişehir, Mersin; 27.5 degrees Celsius in Konak, Izmir, Alanya, Antalya, and Didim, Aydın; 27.4 degrees Celsius in Fethiye, Muğla; 26.7 degrees Celsius in Kaş, Antalya; and 26.6 degrees Celsius in Finike, Antalya. Sea surface temperatures also measured 26.3 degrees Celsius in Biga, Çanakkale and Çeşme, Izmir; 25.6 degrees Celsius in Anamur, Mersin; 25.5 degrees Celsius in Kuşadası, Aydın; 25.1 degrees Celsius in Bandırma, Balıkesir; and 25 degrees Celsius in Bodrum, Muğla.

New Heatwave Approaching

Prof. Dr. Barış Önol, a faculty member of the Department of Meteorological Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), highlighted that sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean and Black Seas are above normal. While temperatures in the Black Sea measured between 24-25 degrees Celsius, temperatures exceeding 28 degrees Celsius were observed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Dr. Önol warned, "We are entering a new heatwave next week, experiencing a very hot June."
