UK Issues 'Red Alert' for Cyprus Due to Heatwave
The UK Foreign Office has issued a 'red alert' for Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Spain, cautioning travelers planning visits to these destinations. British holidaymakers are being warned of the impending heatwave expected to bring record temperatures across the region.
In response to the anticipated extreme weather conditions, the UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for several holiday destinations.
British nationals abroad are urged to exercise caution and take necessary precautions due to the soaring temperatures in these popular European destinations. With warnings specifically regarding the heat in Cyprus, British tourists are bracing for a scorching summer across Europe.
This alert follows severe weather conditions affecting Majorca and Austria during the peak holiday season.
The current heatwave is attributed to hot and dusty winds from North Africa affecting the region. Panos Giannopoulos, a meteorologist with Greek state television, remarked, "This heatwave will go down in history."
Highlighting the unusual weather conditions, Panos added, "We had never experienced a heatwave before June 19th in the 20th century. However, in the 21st century, there have been several, none of which occurred before June 15th."
Meanwhile, according to Birmingham Live, severe flooding in Majorca disrupted operations at Son Sant Joan Airport, Spain's third-largest airport. Operations were temporarily halted for safety reasons, as confirmed by airport operator Aena AENA.
While temperatures in Turkey are hovering in the mid-30s Celsius, Greece has seen temperatures soar up to 45 degrees Celsius.
