Former Turkish Foreign Minister Yaşar Yakış Passes Away at 85
Yaşar Yakış, Turkey's former Foreign Minister, who had been undergoing treatment at Özel Güven Hospital in Ankara, has reportedly passed away at the age of 85.
A seasoned diplomat, Yakış served as Turkey's Foreign Minister from November 19, 2002, to March 14, 2003.
During his tenure, he played a significant role during the referendum process of the Annan Plan, prepared by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue.
Controversy arose during his term when comments regarding the Turkish military's position in Northern Cyprus by then Foreign Minister Yaşar Yakış angered Deniz Baykal. Baykal responded, stating, "Are we going to teach the history of Cyprus to the Foreign Minister?" His remarks stirred considerable public debate, with Baykal suggesting that the Foreign Minister should be the last person in the world to make such statements among six billion people.
