Şimşek, who is currently in Singapore, was expected to attend the FATF General Assembly meeting where the decision was finalized. The announcement was made at 12:00 PM Turkey time.

In 2021, FATF placed Turkey on the grey list for lagging in combating money laundering and terrorist financing. However, Turkey now complies with 39 out of the 40 FATF standards. Last month, an FATF delegation visited Turkey to assess the country’s efforts in preventing money laundering and illicit financing.

Following this visit, Turkey's economic management anticipated the removal from the grey list, suggesting that any contrary decision would be politically motivated.
