Özgür Özel, the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), reiterated his plans to be in Northern Cyprus on July 20th for Peace and Freedom Day, despite remarks from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan suggesting otherwise. Özel's statement, "I will go to Cyprus. Even if Erdoğan says 'don't come,' I will still go. In fact, even if he says 'don't you dare come,' I will go," has sparked attention.

Özgür Özel also indicated a willingness to compromise on the issue of two states in Cyprus, stating, "It is time to leave behind processes where advocating for a solution in Cyprus could be likened to treason."

In an interview with Cansu Çamlıbel of t24, Özgür Özel criticized the stance of Southern Cyprus and France, highlighting their historical veto against Turkey's membership, emphasizing the need to address the Cyprus issue constructively. He stressed that the CHP must no longer shy away from discussing the Cyprus problem, stating structural challenges have hindered the party from formulating a clear policy.

Responding to questions regarding CHP's historical stance aligned with Turkish right-wing and Cyprus' left-wing, Özel referenced the legacy of Prime Minister Ecevit during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, noting their respect for the late Denktaş while advocating for steps towards a permanent solution today.

Regarding President Erdoğan's invitation to attend the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, Özel clarified that his decision to attend was independent of the invitation, expressing a continuous commitment to normalization and peace efforts despite recent political tensions.

Özgür Özel also affirmed his stance post-local elections, emphasizing his commitment to societal issues over political squabbles, asserting, "I will not engage in any conflict that does not concern the problems of society." He reiterated the importance of societal normalcy and criticized ongoing political bickering, underscoring public fatigue with prolonged disputes.

In conclusion, Özgür Özel's remarks underscored his independent stance on Cyprus and normalization efforts, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and resolution of longstanding issues.
