Former Turkish FM: CHP leader Shares AKEL's View on Cyprus

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel's comments on the Cyprus problem, made yesterday, have sparked significant reactions both in Turkey and Cyprus. In response, Zafer Party Deputy Chairman and former Turkish Foreign Minister Şükrü Sina Gürel stated that Özel's stance aligns with those of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL).

Gürel accused Özel of not wanting the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a sovereign equal state. He added, "Özgür Özel rejects not only the legacy of the great Atatürk but also that of Ecevit."

This criticism follows Özel's controversial statement that compromises could be made on the idea of two separate states in Cyprus, which has led to a broad discussion on the issue in Turkish political circles.
