According to Politis, in an article titled "Towards a Rift Between President, UN, and UNFICYP Over Stewart’s Statements on Militarization of Buffer Zone," President Nikos Christodoulides is reportedly preferring to engage in open conflict with the UN while awaiting a report from the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Representative, Maria Angela Holguin.

The newspaper highlighted that hostile sentiments towards the UN and Colin Stewart have been fostered through both leaks and official statements, particularly regarding UNFICYP’s stance on refugees stranded in the buffer zone for weeks. This ongoing issue has created a contentious atmosphere.

President Christodoulides is allegedly concerned about how the situation in the buffer zone, Stewart’s stance, and UNFICYP’s actions will be reflected in the upcoming UN report. The discord with Stewart appears to stem from these concerns.

Despite the tension, Christodoulides attempted to downplay the conflict, stating that disagreements can occur and should be addressed civilly. In response to questions about Stewart, he remarked, “Disagreements can arise, and these points of contention are discussed in a civilized manner.”

Furthermore, in an event covered by Haravgi, Christodoulides clarified that he holds no personal issue with Stewart. He explained that his remarks were prompted by the UN Peacekeeping Press Spokesperson's statements and that he aimed to address the issue fairly.
