Buse Savaşkan Secures Spot in 2024 Paris Olympics

Elite athlete Buse Savaşkan has earned the right to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, bringing pride to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). After a rigorous season aiming for the Olympics, Savaşkan secured her place by ranking 28th in the updated World standings as of June 30, 2024, becoming one of the 32 athletes who will compete in the high jump event.

Athletes competed for Olympic spots from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, with the final lists confirmed after this period. Savaşkan participated in the Turkey Championships in Izmir on June 27-28, where she became the champion with a jump of 1.81 meters despite dealing with an injury. This performance capped off her intense competition season and solidified her Olympic qualification.

Throughout the year, Savaşkan accumulated 1201 points, securing her 28th position among the 32 athletes qualified for the high jump event at the 33rd Olympic Games, to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Alongside her coach, Gennadi Zuiev, Savaşkan's hard work and dedication have paid off, making her a source of pride for her nation once again.

Sakallı: A Proud Moment for Our Country

Speaking on Savaşkan’s Olympic qualification, TRNC Athletics Federation President Ferhat Sakallı expressed immense happiness and pride. “We went through a very long process. Just when everything seemed lost, we revived this journey. We are proud to send our athlete to the Olympics,” Sakallı said. He thanked everyone who supported their cause through writing, broadcasting, and sharing, and extended gratitude to the management board, referees, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Sports Department for their support.

Sakallı emphasized the importance of support in achieving such milestones and expressed hope for more athletes to reach the Olympics in various disciplines. “Experiencing this during my presidency is a great honor. With the experience gained from this Olympics, we aim for a medal in 2028. I wholeheartedly congratulate Buse. Despite the naysayers, we succeeded. This is a proud moment for our country,” he concluded.
