Ayia Napa’s Nissi Named Best Beach in Europe

The platform’s “2024 European Beach Index” ranks beaches based on factors including positive online reviews, affordability, water and air temperatures, and wave height, to help holidaymakers choose ideal destinations.

Nissi Beach, known for its turquoise waters, golden sand, and warm climate, received top honors. The Blue Flag-designated beach offers visitors an affordable daily cost of €103 for essentials like meals, transportation, and even accommodation.

Mellieha Bay in Malta, Portoroz in Slovenia, and Elafonisi in Crete round out the top four.

Giorgos Kafkalias, operator of the Famagusta Tourism Board (ETAP), commented on the recognition. He noted Nissi Beach frequently places among the top ten on Tripadvisor based on visitor reviews and highlighted the Famagusta region’s leading position in Cyprus, with 35 Blue Flag beaches in 2024.

“This distinction shows the way forward,” Kafkalias said. “While we may need to modernise our tourism product, our beaches remain a crucial element. In recent years, there have been campaigns to rid the beaches of plastic, and annual clean-up campaigns have been held.”

He emphasised the importance of online platforms and expert reviews in shaping tourism decisions. “ETAP is concerned with seeing our region gain distinctions, as online views and expert articles are now crucial in shaping opinions about a destination.”
