Two Cypriots Elected to UK Parliament

Two Cypriot candidates from the Labour Party won seats in the UK Parliament in the recent election. The general election, called early by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and held on July 4th, resulted in a victory for the Labour Party.

In the election, two Cypriots secured their positions in the UK Parliament. Nesil Çalışkan became the first Turkish Cypriot to be elected, while Greek Cypriot Bambos Charalambous retained his seat.

First elected in 2017, Bambos Charalambous secured 51% of the votes, totaling 23,337, which was 15,000 more than his nearest competitor, Eric Sukumaran of the Conservative Party.

A Historic First in the UK: Turkish Cypriot Nesil Çalışkan Elected to Parliament

Nesil Çalışkan, a 35-year-old Turkish Cypriot candidate from the Labour Party led by Keir Starmer, was elected from Barking in East London. This marks the first time a Turkish Cypriot has been elected to the UK Parliament.

The election results showed that both Cypriot candidates were successful, becoming members of Parliament.
