UEFA Suspends Merih Demiral for Two Matches
UEFA has handed a two-match suspension to Turkish national team player Merih Demiral due to his goal celebration during the match against Austria. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn the ban.
In Turkey's EURO 2024 Round of 16 match against Austria, Merih Demiral celebrated his goals with a hand gesture mimicking a wolf, known as the "Bozkurt" sign. This celebration led to an investigation by UEFA, which has now resulted in a suspension for the player.
MERİH DEMİRAL RECEIVES TWO-MATCH BAN
UEFA's statement read: "The Turkish Football Federation player Merih Demiral has been banned from participating in a total of two (2) UEFA national team matches for not adhering to general conduct principles, violating basic courtesy rules, using sports events for non-sporting demonstrations, and tarnishing the reputation of football."
TFF APPEALS TO CAS
The TFF has appealed to CAS to overturn Demiral's two-match suspension. If the appeal is unsuccessful, Demiral will miss the quarter-final match against the Netherlands and a potential semi-final clash.
