Tatar: Southern Cyprus Jeopardizes the Island's 50 Years of Peace
TRNC President Ersin Tatar has criticized Southern Cyprus for becoming a logistical base for Israel and other countries, asserting that Southern Cyprus is jeopardizing the peace that has reigned on the island for the past 50 years.
In the tenth part of a special report titled "Western Arms Support to Israel," the Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent interviewed President Tatar about this issue.
President Tatar highlighted the increased military activity in the South, especially by the US and the UK, since Israel launched its attacks on Gaza on October 7, 2023. He stated that the Greek Cypriot administration has turned the South into a military operations center through agreements with these Western countries.
Tatar pointed out that the Greek Cypriots do not benefit from these Middle Eastern maneuvers and are being used by certain states. He recalled repeated warnings about the growing military activity in Southern Cyprus, emphasizing that such actions have made Cyprus a target for major organizations in the Middle East.
"Southern Cyprus Endangers 50 Years of Peace"
Tatar reiterated that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) consistently aligns with Turkey and does not allow its territory to be used to support any massacres. He fully supported Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's statement regarding Israel using Southern Cyprus as a logistical base and shared similar concerns.
President Tatar underscored that the peace established on the island after Turkey's 1974 intervention replaced the previous era of violence and conflict. He remarked:
"Southern Cyprus is jeopardizing the peace that has prevailed on this island for 50 years. No one has the right to destroy the uninterrupted peace that has existed here for half a century. The Greek Cypriot administration is making historic mistakes by failing to recognize the future and interests of its people and by engaging in actions that disrupt regional peace amid the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East."
President Tatar called on the Greek Cypriots to avoid unnecessary risks and policies that could endanger Cyprus, labeling the actions of those who turn Cyprus into a target once again as amateurish and irresponsible towards their own people.
