DPA notes that just days before the 50th anniversary of “the division of Cyprus”, despite numerous mediation efforts, reunification of the island does not appear imminent.

Recently, both the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, and the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have repeatedly advocated for a solution of two sovereign states, which is rejected not only by Nicosia but also by Berlin, the EU, and the UN.

President Christodoulides expressed his gratitude for Germany’s contribution, referring to German President Steinmeier’s visit to Cyprus last February.

He added that the experience of German reunification is invaluable for Cyprus, and Germany’s assistance in shaping a positive Euro-Turkish agenda is crucial for progress towards reunification.
