Akansoy: Tatar Presents Hardline '90s Denktaş Policies as New

CTP General Secretary Asım Akansoy criticized President Ersin Tatar for presenting the hardline policies of Rauf Denktaş from the 1990s as if they were new. Akansoy highlighted that while Turkish President Erdoğan emphasizes the importance of a solution, Tatar avoids even mentioning the word "solution," indicating that Tatar does not desire one.

Akansoy: Tatar Presents Hardline '90s Denktaş Policies as New
A- A A+

Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Akansoy pointed out that if a solution is desired, all relevant parties should focus on what is possible rather than their differing desires. He noted that during the tenures of Denktaş, Talat, Eroğlu, and Akıncı, the Turkish Cypriots had a voice and were represented based on UN Security Council resolutions.

Highlighting the negative impact of the authorities’ isolationist stance, Akansoy remarked, “Erdoğan’s emphasis on a solution is noteworthy, but Tatar doesn’t want a solution; he can’t even utter the word. Tatar is avoiding the solution!”

CTP, one of the oldest and most established parties in Cyprus, prioritizes eliminating the economic and social constraints faced by Turkish Cypriots, Akansoy stated. He emphasized that establishing a mutually acceptable, fair, and politically equal solution is a priority for CTP, as the current harsh conditions pose a societal survival issue.

"UN PARAMETERS ARE NOT HEAVEN-SENT"

Responding to a question about the TBMM's endorsement of a two-state solution, Akansoy emphasized the need to focus on what is feasible if a solution is sought. He reminded that the UN parameters were shaped through historical negotiations involving community leaders and guarantor countries, and they represent common sense rather than imposition.

"BEING AN OBSERVER MEMBER IS NOT AN ACHIEVEMENT"

When asked about the possibility of politics being shaped by federative and two-state solution advocates in the presidential election, Akansoy criticized Tatar’s policies, stating that initiatives like the opening of Varosha and membership efforts in the Organization of Turkic States do not benefit the public. “Being an observer member is not an achievement,” he asserted.

"TATAR PRESENTS HARSH '90S DENKTAŞ POLICIES AS NEW"

Akansoy criticized Tatar for presenting the hardline policies of Rauf Denktaş from the 1990s as new, emphasizing that Tatar overlooks negative impacts on the culture, identity, democracy, and politics of the Turkish Cypriots for personal gain. This approach has contributed to making Northern Cyprus an unlivable place, he added.

"KNOWING TATAR WON'T BE RECOGNIZED"

Akansoy commented that, unlike previous leaders, Tatar is unknown internationally. He questioned the practicality of Tatar’s policies advocating for sovereign equality and international representation, highlighting that efforts to gain recognition for the TRNC have proven futile.

He noted that the current situation binds the hands of both the country and Turkey, introducing serious problems such as property issues.

"HRISTODULIDIS, WHO DESERVES THE MOST CRITICISM, IS NOW PRAISED"

Akansoy underscored that a lasting, just, and mutually acceptable solution must be based on UN Security Council resolutions. Any deviation from this would neither lead to the recognition of the TRNC by the UN Security Council nor be accepted by the Republic of Cyprus. He noted that the authorities' deviation has, unfortunately, placed the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, who deserves the most criticism, in a positive light.

"OUR VIEWS WILL CONTINUE"

Akansoy reiterated that CTP aims to maintain good relations with Turkey while advocating for the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots. He assured that CTP will continue its efforts and dialogues, staying true to its established views.

"EXPECTING STEPS IN THE CYPRUS ISSUE FROM SEPTEMBER ONWARDS"

Regarding the 2025 presidential elections and the shaping of politics around federation and two-state solutions, Akansoy emphasized that politics is about finding solutions and improving the situation for the people. He stressed the importance of being realistic and based on concrete events. Akansoy indicated that from September onwards, they expect some steps to be taken concerning the Cyprus issue.
