Overcrowding in Prisons: Inmate Population Reaches 1005!

KTAMS President Güven Bengihan highlighted the severe overcrowding in the old and new Central Prisons, where a total of 1005 inmates are being overseen by only 275 prison guards. He argued that increasing prison capacity and building new facilities are not viable solutions; instead, the country should address economic and social issues and better control its borders.

In his interview with Kıbrıs Postası, Bengihan expressed concerns over the rising number of prisoners and the issue of employing illegal workers. He stated that the country's lack of regulation has turned it into a "no man's land," resulting in overfilled prisons. He pointed out that individuals from third countries are entering the country illegally, causing significant social and criminal issues. He noted that many of these individuals, especially from African countries, enter through university channels with the intention of working illegally.

"INCREASED WORKLOAD AND OVERTIME FOR PRISON GUARDS"

Bengihan reported that the current inmate population of 1005 has significantly increased the workload for the 275 prison guards, who are being frequently called for overtime shifts.

"PREVENTING STUDENTS FROM BECOMING ILLEGAL"

He revealed that the daily cost of maintaining each inmate is approximately 1200 TL, which negatively impacts public services due to high prison costs. Additionally, he mentioned instances of unfair profit-making in food tenders within the prisons.

Bengihan emphasized the importance of controlling entry and exit points to prevent illegal work and criminal activities. He also stressed the need for legal changes to prevent students from becoming illegal residents after entering the country for educational purposes.
