Two Killed, 23 Injured in Traffic Accidents Over the Past Week

Last week, traffic accidents in the country resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 23 others, with "speeding" being the leading cause once again. The Police Press Office shared details of the accidents and reported traffic offenses for the period of July 15-21.

During the same period, traffic inspections led to reports against 2,469 drivers for various offenses, 253 vehicles were impounded, and 10 drivers were arrested.

A total of 61 accidents occurred throughout the week. Out of these, 2 were fatal, 19 resulted in injuries, and 40 caused property damage. The fatal accidents claimed the lives of 2 individuals, while 23 people were injured in the accidents resulting in injuries.

The causes of the accidents were as follows: 18 due to speeding, 11 due to careless driving, 15 for not stopping at intersections, 10 for following too closely, and 7 for other reasons.

Geographically, the accidents were distributed as follows: 12 in Nicosia, 16 in Famagusta, 26 in Kyrenia, 2 in Omorfo, and 5 in İskele. The total recorded damage from these accidents amounted to 5,837,800 TL.

Inspection Results: 253 Vehicles Impounded, 10 Drivers Arrested

Additionally, during traffic inspections conducted nationwide in the same period, 13,579 drivers were checked, and 2,469 drivers found to be in violation of traffic laws were reported and legal actions initiated against them. Furthermore, 253 vehicles were impounded, and 10 drivers were arrested.

The distribution of reported offenses during this period is as follows:

  • Speeding: 1,014
  • Speeding detected by mobile devices: 285
  • Dangerous driving: 13
  • Careless driving: 28
  • Driving without a registration certificate: 277
  • Driving without a license: 16
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 52
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 171
  • Driving without wearing a seatbelt: 138
  • Failing to obey traffic signs and signals: 117
  • Failing to obey traffic lights: 7
  • Driving without a vehicle inspection: 99
  • Driving without insurance or outside the scope of insurance: 64
  • Using a vehicle for passenger transport without a 'T' business permit: 10
  • Using a vehicle for private goods transport without a 'B' business permit: 13
  • Transporting excess or dangerous loads: 2
  • Riding a motorcycle without a protective helmet: 13
  • Failing to comply with lighting regulations or driving with inadequate lighting: 18
  • Other offenses: 417
