Inspector Peter Mandi, commander of Angoram police station, said a gang of more than 30 young men, calling themselves “I don’t care,” carried out the attacks in the remote Sepik River villages of Tamara, Tambari, and Angrumara.

The assaults, which occurred between April 17 and 18, involved rape, murder, and arson. Houses were torched, and an unconfirmed number of women and girls were reportedly raped before being killed.

“So far, 26 are confirmed dead from both villages, whilst the villagers who fled are still unaccounted for,” Mandi said, adding that the death toll could rise as police search the area.

The remote location hampered initial police response, with local officers only reaching the area on Tuesday and national reinforcements arriving Thursday.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed horror at the violence, which he said may have stemmed from a dispute over land and lake ownership. Türk called for prompt investigations and urged authorities to address root causes of land disputes to prevent further violence.
