Under the heading “Taking preventive measures is easier than extinguishing a fire,” the Fire Department outlined several steps to prevent fires.

Here are the key fire safety measures:

  1. No Fires from May 1 to October 31: During this period, it is prohibited to light any fires, even for cleaning purposes. Always remember that fires in areas that are not fire-resistant can spread uncontrollably.

  2. Proper Disposal of Cigarette Butts: Make sure cigarette butts are completely extinguished before disposing of them. Avoid throwing them along roadsides, in forested areas, or into trash bins and flammable materials.

  3. Report Electrical Hazards: If you see hazardous conditions such as transformer stations, electric poles, or trees touching electrical wires, or if branches could fall onto power lines during bad weather, call the Electrical Fault Line at 188.

  4. Avoid Overloading Electrical Outlets: Do not overload electrical outlets with high-current devices (such as irons or hairdryers) as this increases the risk of fire.

  5. Tree Maintenance Near Power Lines: Trim branches that come into contact with power lines. Before trimming, cut off the power, clear any dry grass underneath, and ensure that fire extinguishing equipment is available.

  6. Gas Leak Safety: If you suspect a gas leak in your home or workplace, do not use electrical switches or devices that could create sparks. Turn off the electricity at the breaker, open windows and doors to ventilate the area, and use a broom to help vent the gas outside.

  7. Vehicle Maintenance: Regularly service and maintain private vehicles, public transport, fuel-carrying vehicles, and agricultural machinery to prevent fuel leaks, short circuits, and sparks from exhausts that could lead to fires.

  8. Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers in your vehicles and homes, and learn how to use them. This will help prevent the escalation of fires and address potential hazards effectively.

The Fire Department emphasizes that taking these precautions can help prevent fires and ensure safety in various situations.
