The Cyprus Turkish Medical Association has urged the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to implement necessary legal regulations urgently and to conduct effective, adequate, and transparent inspections. In their written statement, the association pointed out that the lack of regular and effective inspections by independent auditors has led to the non-implementation of safety standards in many workplaces. They called for defining and enforcing workplace standards with independent audits and imposing serious and deterrent penalties.

The statement continued: "In many workplaces, personal protective equipment required for employees is either non-existent or insufficient. This situation leads to serious injuries and fatalities in work accidents. It is essential to organize safety training for workers. Establishing vocational schools where blue-collar workers can receive adequate training on occupational risks and hazards will not only prevent accidents but also enhance work quality and productivity. The lack of sufficient legislation on occupational health and safety, the absence of an occupational physician system, and the ineffective enforcement of existing laws result in workplace accidents and fatalities.

Unregistered workers, deprived of legal protections and health safety measures, are at greater risk. Foreign workers and those with language barriers should be monitored more carefully and must undergo training on work and safety before starting their jobs. The increasing worker deaths in Northern Cyprus indicate that deficiencies and violations in occupational health and safety need urgent rectification; worker fatalities have now turned into workplace murders. Both employers and government officials must fulfill their responsibilities to prevent these traumatic incidents. Ensuring safe working conditions in workplaces will not only protect workers' lives but also enhance societal welfare and economic productivity.

We call on the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, responsible for the safety of working life, to urgently implement the necessary legal regulations and conduct effective, adequate, and transparent inspections to end worker murders."
