According to Haravgi newspaper, Doughty made these remarks last Tuesday during discussions on foreign policy in the House of Commons, where he outlined the stance of the new Labour government regarding Cyprus.

Doughty emphasized that the UK continues to support a resolution based on political equality, aligned with United Nations Security Council resolutions. This stance remains unchanged under the Labour government, maintaining the UK's long-standing position on the Cyprus problem.

In response to a question from Roger Gale, a Conservative Party MP and the new Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, about the steps to be taken for resolving the Cyprus issue, Doughty reiterated the UK's dedication to the framework of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the principles of political equality as outlined by the UN Security Council.
