Tatar Warns Against Trusting Greek Cypriot Leaders' Negotiation Claims

President Ersin Tatar cautioned Greek Cypriots not to be misled by their leaders' claims about resuming negotiations from where they left off. Tatar criticized Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides' statements regarding a "trilateral meeting" as manipulative and motivated by personal concerns. He said, "The Greek Cypriot people should not be deceived by their leaders' claims that negotiations will continue from where they left off. These claims are both baseless and far from reality."

In a written statement to the Turkish News Agency Cyprus (TAK), Tatar addressed Christodoulides' recent remarks, accusing him of trying to manipulate perceptions by involving UN Secretary-General Guterres in his efforts.

Tatar stated, "The Greek Cypriot leader, particularly after Mr. Holguin's report to the UN Secretary-General and the end of the Personal Representative's role, has found himself in a state of desperation. The Personal Representative noted the lack of common ground between the two sides for a new and official process, which has been recorded with the Secretary-General. This means that the federation as a solution for the Cyprus issue, which was completely exhausted at Crans Montana in 2017, is no longer an option."

"INSULTING OUR PEOPLE"

Tatar emphasized that the most unacceptable aspect of Christodoulides' statements is his remarks about the Turkish Cypriot people. "The Greek Cypriot leader, whose greatest effort has been to continue the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people for 61 years, has started insulting not only me but also my people. The future of the Turkish Cypriot people is not dependent on the Greek Cypriot leader or their mindset," he said.

Tatar reiterated that they will not allow the Greek Cypriot Administration to maintain the status it has unlawfully seized over the years and included the following statements in his message:

"MESSAGE TO THE GREEK CYPRIOT PEOPLE: DO NOT BE DECEIVED"

"We will not consent to the violation of my people's fundamental human rights on this island. We will not be used to sustain the comfort zones they wish to maintain through endless negotiation processes. This era is over. I find it beneficial to repeat: the negotiation processes on a federation basis are finished. The federation basis has been exhausted, never to return. Therefore, my message to the Greek Cypriot people is not to be deceived by their leader's claims that negotiations will continue from where they left off. These claims are both baseless and far from reality."

Tatar added that a new and official process could only begin with the confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots:

"As long as the isolation imposed on my people continues, we will not engage in any actions that normalize this unjust, unlawful, and inhumane practice. Understanding this clearly will serve as a guide for the next steps that can be taken in the current situation where no common ground exists. A just and lasting solution in Cyprus can only be achieved through the cooperation of two States. The security, prosperity, and future of the Turkish Cypriot people are in safe hands. The support provided by our motherland Turkey in almost every field is the most important assurance of this."
