Verdicts Announced in the Halil Falyalı Murder Case

The court has announced the verdicts for the defendants in the case of the murder of businessman Halil Falyalı and his driver Murat Demirtaş, which occurred on February 8, 2022. Ömer Tunç was sentenced to life imprisonment, Veysel Sare received a 35-year sentence, and Musa Çiçek was sentenced to 20 years.

The defendants were tried in front of Kyrenia Heavy Penal Court President Banu Soyer, Senior Judge Mine Ozankaya, and Judge Temay Sağer. After extensive proceedings, the court found the defendants guilty of all charges against them, as announced by President Banu Soyer.

Background of the Case

On February 8, 2022, in Kyrenia – Çatalköy, Halil Falyalı was critically injured in a shooting while in his car and was taken to Lefkoşa Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital. Despite being transferred to Near East University Hospital, he could not be saved, and his driver, Murat Demirtaş, died at the scene.

During searches conducted on February 14, 2022, two Kalashnikov rifles, four magazines, and 39 bullets were found discarded in a streambed approximately one kilometer west of the crime scene, along with a 9mm pistol, a magazine, and 13 bullets. Ballistic analysis confirmed that these weapons were used in the crime.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

In the investigation conducted in the northern part of Cyprus, Veysel Sare, Musa Çiçek, and Ömer Tunç were arrested, while in Turkey, eight suspects, including Mustafa Söylemez, were detained in operations on February 9, 12, and 13. Veysel Sare, Musa Çiçek, and Ömer Tunç were remanded to custody on March 4, 2022.

The verdict for the suspects detained in Turkey was announced on January 19, 2024. The Istanbul 36th High Criminal Court sentenced Mustafa Söylemez to two life sentences for "premeditated murder." Other defendants, Abdurrahim Çelik, Cengiz Şener, and Ender Yıldız, were sentenced to 25 years each for "aiding premeditated murder" with a sentence of 12 years and 6 months.

Mehmet Faysal Söylemez was acquitted of "premeditated double murder" and "establishing and leading a criminal organization" due to lack of evidence and was released. The court acquitted all defendants of "membership in a criminal organization," while it ruled for the acquittal of Metin Süs on all charges.

The court also decided to separate the case for defendant Cemil Önal regarding "premeditated murder" and "membership in a criminal organization."
