Bangladeshi National Arrested for Six Years of Illegal Residency Appears in Court

Muhammed Kamala Uddin, a Bangladeshi national who has lived illegally in Northern Cyprus for six years, was brought to court yesterday. Judge Jale Ergünden questioned Uddin about his circumstances during his illegal residency, asking, "For the past six years, how did you survive, what did you eat, what did you drink, what did you do, or where did you work?"

Uddin was apprehended on August 6, 2024, when he visited the Immigration Office at the Lefkoşa Police Headquarters to obtain an entry-exit permit. During the immigration check, it was discovered that he had been residing in the country illegally since November 11, 2019. He was arrested on the spot for being in violation of immigration laws.

Police officer Kadir Çetin reported that the necessary investigation had been conducted by the Ministry of Interior, confirming Uddin’s illegal residency status and lack of legal ties to the KKTC. The police requested that Uddin be sent to prison as there was no legal basis for his stay in Northern Cyprus.

Judge Ergünden expressed skepticism about Uddin’s claim that he had been working day-to-day jobs, noting that it would have been impossible to sustain oneself for six years in this manner. She concluded that Uddin was not truthful in his statements.

Uddin was ordered to be held in custody for up to 15 days until his case is heard.
