The man appeared in court in the north on Monday, where it was revealed that he had in fact stolen two caravans on two separate occasions, having entered the north via the village of Louroujina.

A police representative in court explained that the man had most recently stolen the caravan from a car park off the central Belediye boulevard in Yenikent on August 6.

He had tied the caravan to the towbar of his own car and then driven off. The police representative said the caravan had been found near Louroujina.

He than added that further investigations had found that the same man had stolen another caravan, valued at £9,000 (€10,511), which had been parked next to the King Autos used car showroom, which is located in Mandres, off the dual carriageway linking Morphou and Famagusta.

The man was then arrested on August 8, with police then determining that he had entered the north illegally.

Police then They then searched his vehicle, and found a total of 103 cartons of cigarettes, seven cartons of rolling tobacco, one carton of hookah tobacco, and 25 cartons of tobacco sticks for electronic cigarettes, all of which had been smuggled to the north from the Republic.

The tobacco products were all seized by the police and taken as evidence.

The man had then been taken to military court on August 9 for the crime of violating a military controlled area, as is customary for all those who enter the north from the Republic without using crossing points. There, he was handed a three-day remand.

With that remand having now expired, he appeared in civilian court on Monday, with the police’s representative asking that the man be handed a further remand as they need the time to examine more evidence, including CCTV footage, and take witness statements.

Judge Nuray Necdet acquiesced, and the man was remanded in custody for a further three days.
