Speaking on the "Sabah Postası" program on Kıbrıs Postası, Dr. Çakıcı emphasized that the effects of the pandemic and economic crises have led to serious mental health issues. He highlighted that there has been a dramatic increase in cases of mental illness and addiction, causing deep concerns across society. Dr. Çakıcı noted that the use of alcohol and drugs has escalated, saying, "We are seeing a number of severe psychiatric cases that we have never encountered before."

"Economic Crises are Leading People to Anxiety and Depression"

Dr. Çakıcı explained, "The impacts of the pandemic and economic crises are pushing people towards anxiety and depression. During this period, people are turning to alcohol and drugs as a means of self-treatment. We have encountered an unprecedented number of severe psychiatric cases."

"Drug and Alcohol Use Brings Mental Illnesses"

Dr. Çakıcı stressed that there has been a significant increase in severe mental illnesses, which are not limited to addiction alone. He pointed out that they are also dealing with mental health disorders that arise from drug and alcohol use. "Voluntary admission is important, but in cases where individuals pose a danger to themselves or others, it may be necessary to admit them to a secure unit with police escort. For such situations, we intervene at the Barış and Ruh Sağlığı Hospital," he added.

"The Workload of Mental Health Professionals is Extremely Heavy"

Dr. Çakıcı noted that serious mental disorders, particularly psychosis, are behind some incidents. "The workload of mental health professionals is extremely heavy. It is crucial to involve not only psychiatrists but also psychologists," he said.

He further highlighted that Pembe Köşk Psychiatry Hospital, a significant center for addiction treatment, operates as an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment and Research Center (AMATEM). Dr. Çakıcı underscored the importance of expanding long-term rehabilitation programs to address these issues effectively.
