KTTO: Loading and Unloading Operations at Famagusta and Kyrenia Ports Should Be Handled by Local Businesses

The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce (KTTO) has issued a statement regarding the loading and unloading operations at Famagusta and Kyrenia ports, emphasizing that these operations should be carried out by local businesses. In the statement, KTTO assessed the situation, noting that the loading and unloading operations at the ports have taken on a different form since the weakening and eventual dissolution of the Port Workers Company. As a result, private sector enterprises have largely taken over these responsibilities.

The statement highlighted that significant investments have been made, and equipment fleets have been established by private sector businesses eager to assume these roles following the dissolution of the Port Workers Company.

The statement also mentioned the following:

"In the meantime, it has been announced that these services will be privatized through a tender process.

KTTO officials have personally observed during their visits that the local businesses currently operating at our ports, as well as the partnerships they could form, are fully capable of handling the loading and unloading operations. Our local businesses possess both the expertise and the necessary equipment to continue these services. It is of great importance that the loading and unloading services at the Famagusta and Kyrenia ports be maintained by these local enterprises, ensuring the preservation of local expertise.

We announce to the public that we will share our request with the relevant authorities for the tender to be conducted with this principle in mind, limiting participation to local businesses or partnerships they establish. We urge all concerned parties to be mindful of this matter."
