Taçoy: "I Have Not Sided with Any Candidate in Party Elections"

Hasan Taçoy, a candidate for the leadership of the National Unity Party (UBP), stated that he has not taken sides in any of the party’s organizational elections. Speaking on a program hosted by Muazzez Gazihan on Genç TV, Taçoy addressed various issues on the agenda, emphasizing that UBP is currently undergoing a significant test of democracy.

Taçoy: "I Have Not Sided with Any Candidate in Party Elections"

Taçoy underscored that the results of the district elections, where members cast their votes, did not surprise him, except in one instance. He reiterated that he had not supported any particular candidate during the district elections, explaining, "A candidate for the general leadership must work together with whoever is elected at the lower levels. While UBP experiences a democratic contest, our colleagues will either win or lose the election with all its positives and negatives. Competition lasts only for a day; there is no place for permanent enmity in politics. I always stress that there is no concept of constant hostility in politics. Competition happens and then it ends. Our greatest strength afterward is the unity embedded in our party’s name."

Referring to claims that "Üstel’s candidates won" in certain districts, Taçoy disagreed, stating, "I don’t subscribe to the notion that anyone but UBP itself is the winner in these organizational elections."

Taçoy also recalled that there were no opposing candidates in three districts, leading to the election of a single candidate without contest. In two other districts, candidates were reportedly pressured to withdraw due to Üstel's influence as Prime Minister.

Highlighting that only the youth branch election took place in Nicosia, Taçoy noted that a candidate for the women's branch was disqualified by the court due to insufficient membership tenure. He pointed out that this issue had been raised from the beginning, lamenting that "the current administration operates with personal and negative sentiments, leading to a court decision that validated our concerns."

Taçoy emphasized that UBP's elected representatives reflect the party's broader base, not just a single individual. He reminded that the general president elected on September 21 will work with these individuals.

He concluded, "Setting rules to satisfy only our negative emotions is misguided. Our goal should be to satisfy the sentiments of all those who have committed to UBP. The emotions of all UBP members, regardless of their views, must be respected."

In a final remark, Taçoy stated, "Everyone should reflect deeply. If people are dissatisfied with the situation, there are alternatives available. In the end, this democratic race will not produce individual winners. The ultimate winner will be our party and our country. UBP is the nation, the homeland, the state. Those who will govern this state will emerge from within this unity and solidarity."
