Uthman Sent to Prison
Abubakar Uthman, well-known to locals in Nicosia who had been offering him assistance, was brought before the court and subsequently sent to prison for up to 20 days. Uthman, who had been living illegally in the country for 16 years, was arrested in Nicosia and appeared in court.
Uthman was defended by the President of the Bar Association, Hasan Esendağlı, who announced plans to apply for legal status on behalf of Uthman.
The arrest of the 44-year-old Uthman, who had been living as an undocumented immigrant in Nicosia for 16 years, sparked public outcry. The court ruled that Uthman be sent to prison for no more than 20 days and ordered a medical examination.
Lawyers following the case told Kıbrıs Postası that the court also ordered physical and mental health checks, along with blood tests for Uthman. The lawyers emphasized that Uthman’s application for a work permit and his asylum request would be closely monitored. In addition to the Bar Association, the Refugee Rights Association (MHD) will also oversee the process.
