According to Haravgi and other newspapers, Andoniu reiterated in his statement yesterday that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has responded positively to the UN Secretary-General’s initiative for a trilateral meeting. He emphasized that any such initiative must be based on UN resolutions and speculated that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Maria Angela Holguin, may return to the island, indicating that her mission is not yet complete.

Andoniu also commented on Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s participation in the EU Foreign Ministers’ Informal Meeting, noting that this was accepted within the context of linking EU-Turkey relations to the Cyprus issue.

Menelau: In Contact with UN on Next Steps

Meanwhile, Fileleftheros reported that Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelau stated they are in contact with the UN regarding the next steps. Menelau suggested that the trilateral meeting efforts have encountered obstacles due to the stance of the Turkish Cypriot side, and stressed the importance of this step for determining how to proceed. He added that the Greek Cypriot side is committed to acting constructively.

Menelau claimed that it is impossible to predict the Turkish side’s actions, noting that public statements so far have echoed familiar positions. However, he assured that efforts by the UN, other key parties, and the Republic of Cyprus continue.

In response to a question, Menelau mentioned that the Cyprus negotiation group held its first meeting on Friday, during which the parties expressed their views.
