Gerapetritis to Fidan: Need to Restart Dialogue on Cyprus

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis emphasized the need to restart dialogue on the Cyprus issue and take advantage of the opportunity created by the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations during his meeting with Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Brussels today.

According to Greek media reports based on diplomatic sources, during the meeting between Gerapetritis and Fidan, the Greek Minister stressed "the need to restart dialogue within the framework of the UN Security Council's decisions and to capitalize on the opportunity presented by the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations."

The one-hour meeting, held at Greece's Permanent Representation Office to the European Council, also covered Greek-Turkish relations and Turkey's European perspective.

The Greek Foreign Minister highlighted that Greece supports Turkey's European perspective but stressed the importance of adhering to the European acquis, the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all member states, and the Common Foreign Policy and EU Security Policy. He noted that greater coordination between Turkey and the EU is needed.

In the discussions on Greek-Turkish relations, Gerapetritis addressed all issues that had caused tensions with Turkey in the previous period, emphasizing the need for a positive climate, avoiding tensions, and respecting international law.

Finally, the upcoming meeting of the leaders of Greece and Turkey in New York was discussed, focusing on the schedule and next steps of the dialogue.
