In a statement, the Commission highlighted that the 2024 Annual Action Programme, which was approved today, allocates this new EU fund to further support key initiatives such as the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Halloumi/Hellim Programme and the expansion of Green Line trade.

The PDO Halloumi/Hellim, noted as the first Protected Designation of Origin product open to Turkish Cypriot producers, will benefit from the 2024 programme. The funding will help Turkish Cypriot producers meet EU food safety and animal health standards, enabling them to market their products within the EU.

The programme includes a grant scheme designed for stakeholders in the dairy and agricultural food sectors. This scheme will assist producers in meeting the necessary standards to sell PDO-compliant Halloumi/Hellim through the Green Line, thereby benefiting from this trade.

Additionally, the programme allocates funds for the construction of a bi-communal solar energy plant, in line with the EU's "Green Deal" objectives, should the two communities agree on the project. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between the communities in energy efficiency and green electricity production.

To support the development of the private sector, grants and technical assistance will be provided to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs to help them grow and solidify their businesses. In education, the programme will offer special support and technical assistance, including laboratory equipment, to help teachers and educators enhance their skills in lifelong learning and special education.

The statement also emphasized that the bi-communal scholarship programme will remain a priority in the 2024 funding period. It will continue to support Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot students participating together in the International Baccalaureate programme at United World Colleges (UWC), institutions known for their peace-oriented focus.

Furthermore, the programme will maintain its support for the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus and the restoration of the island's cultural heritage, aiming to build trust between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities.

The statement concluded by noting that this support is intended to promote reconciliation and increase respect for Cyprus's diverse cultures and religions.
