83 Traffic Accidents in a Week: 1 Dead, 26 Injured

In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), 83 traffic accidents occurred over the past week. These accidents resulted in one fatality and 26 injuries.

Between August 26 and September 1, a total of 83 traffic accidents were reported across the TRNC. According to the Police Press Office, the breakdown of these accidents is as follows: one resulted in death, 18 in injuries, and 64 caused material damage. The total financial damage from these accidents was 6,512,150 TL.

The main causes of the accidents were speeding (23 incidents), careless driving (21 incidents), failure to stop at intersections (16 incidents), and tailgating (13 incidents). The distribution of accidents by district was as follows: Lefkoşa with 29, Girne with 28, Gazimağusa with 15, Güzelyurt with 6, and İskele with 5.

During the same period, police conducted traffic checks on 16,457 drivers, initiating legal action against 3,020 of them. The most common traffic violations were:

  • Speeding (1,162 incidents)
  • Speeding detected by mobile units (107 incidents)
  • Dangerous driving (17 incidents)
  • Careless driving (48 incidents)
  • Driving without a vehicle registration (225 incidents)
  • Driving without a license (21 incidents)
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol (95 incidents)
  • Using a mobile phone while driving (223 incidents)
  • Driving without a seatbelt (138 incidents)

A total of 237 vehicles were impounded, and 8 drivers were arrested.
