Government Reverses Deportation Orders for 27 Individuals, Allowing Their Return

The UBP-YDP-DP coalition government has revoked deportation orders for 27 individuals, permitting their return to the island under the claim of "family reunification." Among these individuals is a person wanted by Interpol for robbery, who had previously been declared a "prohibited migrant" by the same government just a month and a half ago.

Some of those allowed to return had been deported following convictions for violent offenses. This decision comes after the government introduced an amendment to the Foreigners and Immigration Law, allowing a form of amnesty for deported individuals.

Notable Cases Include:

  • Zhenhe Hua/Hua Dongperez: Deported in July 2024, Dongperez had been wanted by Interpol for robbery. Despite being declared a prohibited migrant, he had re-entered northern Cyprus under different identities and had even been granted a business permit.

  • Abdülkerim Büyükaşık: In December 2019, Büyükaşık broke into a supermarket and stole cigarettes and alcohol. After being arrested and imprisoned, he was deported.

  • Adnan Uyur: In November 2019, Uyur assaulted his neighbor in Haspolat, breaking his cheekbone with a plastic flashlight. He was deported following his trial.

  • İbrahim Demirelişçi: In December 2020, Demirelişçi was involved in stealing construction machinery and materials. He was deported after serving time.

  • Mahmut Elinç: In 2019, Elinç, working as a security guard, assaulted a nightclub patron, breaking their jaw and nose. He was subsequently deported.

  • Ali Balgermiş: In 2019, Balgermiş attacked a person, causing a broken shoulder, and stole a wallet containing 1,500 TL. He was deported after serving time.

  • Ferhat Ateş: In April 2019, Ateş was caught breaking into a house in Famagusta and was deported after his conviction.

The government's decision to allow these individuals' return has raised questions about public safety and the criteria for reversing deportation orders.
