According to his lawyer, Ron Berkman, who spoke to The Jerusalem Post, Aykut narrowly escaped harm last Thursday after a fellow inmate, alleged to be an ISIS member, attempted to stab him with a sharpened phone card. Other prisoners intervened, saving Aykut from serious injury.

Berkman expressed concern over Aykut’s safety, noting, “This time he was lucky, but we fear there might not be anyone to help him next time.” Jack Afik, CEO of Afik Group and Aykut’s son, condemned the prison for housing terrorists alongside inmates with minor offenses. “Where is their sense of responsibility? This time it was ISIS, but next time it could be Greek nationalists,” he told the Jerusalem Post.

Aykut, 74, has been in pre-trial detention at the Nicosia Central Prison since his arrest by the Cyprus police on June 10. He is awaiting an indictment, expected to be filed on September 9. Aykut was reportedly en route from northern Cyprus to Israel when he was detained.
