Simon Aykut Faces 242 Charges
Simon Aykut, CEO of the "Duminka" company, was reportedly charged with 242 counts during his court appearance yesterday, related to the illegal use and sale of former Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC.
Fileleftheros and other newspapers reported that Aykut is accused of exploiting former Greek Cypriot properties through his construction business in the TRNC. Attorney Vasilis Bissas, representing the Republic of Cyprus, presented the charges and argued for Aykut's continued detention, citing the severity of the offenses and the risk of flight. According to the prosecution, the illegal activities generated €43.5 million, and the crimes could result in up to 14 years in prison.
The court also heard testimonies from Aykut’s personal driver and a Greek Cypriot businessman, Savvos Kakkos, involved in possible investment talks. The driver reportedly stated that Aykut was the "big boss" of the Duminka company, while Kakkos mentioned discussions with Aykut’s son Jack Afik about a project, partly built on former Greek Cypriot land in the TRNC.
Aykut’s lawyers argued that he had no intention of fleeing and was prepared to post €1 million in bail. They also submitted documents showing that Aykut had no connection to the Duminka company, which was owned by his two sons. They further claimed that Aykut had been attacked in prison and was under constant threat.
The court is expected to announce its decision regarding Aykut’s continued detention on September 11, with the trial resuming on September 27.
