Prof. Dr. Çakıcı: Suicide Rates Rising, Prevention Efforts Insufficient

On World Suicide Prevention Day, psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Mehmet Çakıcı spoke to Kıbrıs Postası about the increasing suicide rates and high levels of mental health disorders in the community. He highlighted that these issues are not being effectively addressed and that adequate preventive measures are lacking.

Prof. Dr. Çakıcı noted that the rates of suicide and mental health disorders in Northern Cyprus are notably high. He pointed out that the rate of major depression is 23.4%, placing Northern Cyprus among the top 10 countries worldwide for this condition.

"Anxiety Disorders at 12%, Gambling Addiction in the Top 4, Drug Use at 9%"

He further detailed that anxiety disorders affect 12% of the population, with Northern Cyprus ranking among the top four countries for gambling addiction. Additionally, drug use has risen to 9%.

"Mental Health Disorders Are Extremely High"

Prof. Dr. Çakıcı emphasized that psychiatric trauma rates have reached 19%, and these figures are supported by scientific studies and articles. He stressed the alarmingly high rates of mental health disorders in the community.

"Increased Cases of Violence, Particularly During the Pandemic"

Highlighting the World Health Organization’s reports on the rise in mental health issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Dr. Çakıcı noted, “We have seen an increase in mental health cases and new forms of violence.”

"Suicides Cannot Be Prevented"

He concluded by noting that the increase in suicides correlates with the rise in mental health disorders, criticizing the insufficient efforts to prevent suicides. Prof. Dr. Çakıcı stated, “Suicides cannot be prevented.”
