Burak Maviş: "For the First Time in History, We Can't Open Schools!"

KTÖS (Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Union) Secretary-General Burak Maviş has expressed frustration over the delayed start of the school year, declaring, "For the first time in history, we can’t open schools!" In a press statement, Maviş criticized the government, attributing the ongoing issues in education to a lack of proper planning.

He argued that the failure to open schools is unprecedented and blamed the situation on political ambitions, specifically what he referred to as a "presidency obsession." Maviş highlighted that despite no state of emergency, war, or natural disaster, the government has failed to address systemic issues that prevent schools from opening on time.

Maviş criticized the government’s response to the teachers' unions' strike decision, stating that instead of resolving long-standing problems, the authorities have opted to postpone the opening of schools. He emphasized that the issues in education do not stem from construction sites, renovations, or staff shortages but from a failure to plan effectively.

"While teachers and school administrators are doing everything they can to open schools, the dreams of students have been sabotaged due to political ambitions," said Maviş.

He also shared some figures regarding the current state of schools:

  • Number of schools out of use: 19
  • Number of schools with temporary container classrooms: 25
  • Number of schools with completed reinforcement works: 10
  • Number of schools still undergoing renovations: 8
  • Number of schools without completed reporting: 39
  • Temporary teacher shortage: 240
  • Unassigned teachers: 0
  • Special education teacher shortage: 10

Maviş accused the government of prioritizing political interests over addressing the deficiencies in the education system, stating that those using children’s education for political gain should be held accountable.
